The definition
Where traditional SEO asks "does my page rank in the top 10 blue links?", AI visibility asks "when the AI summarizes the answer for the user, does it name my brand at all?"
Why AI visibility matters now
Three shifts converged in 2024–2026 to make AI visibility a board-level metric:
- Answer engines replaced search for high-intent queries. When a buyer asks ChatGPT "what's the best project management tool for a 12-person agency?", they don't click through 10 links — they read one synthesized recommendation.
- Citations are zero-click. A brand named in an AI answer wins the decision before the user ever visits a website. Brands left out of the answer are effectively invisible.
- The cited sources are a small set. AI engines pull from a much narrower set of trusted domains than Google. Winning AI visibility means earning citations on those specific pages.
The five metrics of AI visibility
Every credible AI visibility platform rolls up to the same five numbers. Track them per engine, daily.
The share of a tracked prompt set where the AI engine names your brand at all.
The share of answers that link to URLs you own as cited sources. Critical for Perplexity and Gemini.
When an AI answer lists multiple brands, where does yours appear? First, third, last? Order shapes recall.
Is the AI describing you positively, neutrally or negatively? A high mention rate paired with negative sentiment is a problem, not a win.
Your mention count divided by the total mention count of you plus tracked competitors. The single best comparable number.
AI visibility vs. SEO — what's the same, what's different
The underlying inputs overlap. AI engines lean heavily on high-authority content, structured data and clear answer formatting — the same signals that drive SEO success. What changes:
- The metric is share of an answer, not a SERP position.
- Citations come from a narrower allowlist. Reddit, Wikipedia, well-known publishers and a brand's own docs dominate.
- You measure it per engine, daily. AI answers are stochastic — the same prompt run twice can return different brand mentions.
- Tactics shift toward AEO/GEO. Direct answers, structured Q&A, and being mentioned on the sources AI cites matter more than backlink volume.
How to start measuring AI visibility
- Build a prompt set. 100–500 prompts your customers actually ask, across the buyer journey.
- Run them daily across engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude at a minimum.
- Tag mentions of your brand and competitors in each answer.
- Roll up to a Visibility Score per engine and a head-to-head share of voice vs. each competitor.
- Act on the gaps. Find prompts where competitors win but you don't — and figure out which cited sources you need to influence.
