AI visibility score, explained.

A single comparable number for how well your brand performs in AI-generated answers.

TL;DR
The AI visibility score rolls mention rate, citation rate, rank position and sentiment into a single 0–100 number per engine. Above 60 is strong; below 30 means AI engines barely know you exist for the prompts you care about.

What the score actually measures

The AI visibility score answers one question: across the prompts my customers ask, how well does this AI engine mention, cite and describe my brand vs. all the alternatives?

It's deliberately simple. Marketing leaders need one comparable number that trends over time — the way Domain Authority gave SEO leaders a single rollup metric.

How it's calculated

Citations.io and most other AI visibility platforms weight four inputs:

InputWhat it capturesWeight
Mention rateShare of tracked prompts that name your brand40%
Citation rateShare of answers that link to URLs you own25%
Average rankPosition when listed alongside competitors (lower = better)20%
SentimentPositive / neutral / negative framing of each mention15%

Each input is measured against your tracked prompt set per engine, normalized to a 0–100 scale, and rolled up.

What a "good" score looks like

ScoreWhat it meansTypical brand
80–100Category-defining presence in AI answersMarket leader, widely cited
60–79Strong — consistently named, often firstEstablished challenger
40–59Solid — appears for ~half of relevant promptsGrowing brand with content
20–39Patchy — mentioned only for specific queriesNiche or new entrant
0–19Effectively invisiblePre-AI-era brand, no AEO work

Per-engine benchmarks

Scores aren't directly comparable across engines. A 70 on Perplexity is not the same as a 70 on Claude — Perplexity surfaces more brands per answer, so absolute mention rates are higher. Track relative movement and share of voice vs. competitors within each engine.

How to improve your AI visibility score

  1. Identify prompts where competitors win and you don't.
  2. Find the cited sources AI is pulling from for those prompts.
  3. Earn mentions on those sources — direct posts, comparison content, or partnerships.
  4. Publish structured answer content on your own site so the AI has a clean canonical source to cite.
  5. Re-measure weekly; AI source pools refresh constantly.

The AEO framework covers the tactics in detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good AI visibility score?+
Above 60 is strong for a category leader; 40–60 is solid for a challenger; below 30 means the AI rarely mentions you and you're losing answer-share to competitors. Scores vary by engine — Perplexity and ChatGPT tend to mention more brands per answer than Claude.
How is the AI visibility score calculated?+
Most tools combine four weighted inputs: mention rate (40%), citation rate (25%), average rank when listed (20%), and sentiment (15%). Each is measured against a tracked prompt set per engine, then normalized to a 0–100 scale.
Why does my score differ between engines?+
Each AI engine has a different training cutoff, retrieval system, citation behavior and answer style. Perplexity cites web sources aggressively; Claude is more conservative; Gemini blends Google's index. The same brand can score 70 on Perplexity and 35 on Claude.
How often should I check my AI visibility score?+
Daily. AI answers are stochastic and the source pool changes constantly. Weekly is the minimum useful cadence; monthly snapshots miss the volatility that matters.
