How this engine builds an answer
Plain version: Google writes a short answer at the top of the results and links to the pages it used. If your page is one of those, your brand is in front of the buyer even if they never click.
Specialist version: the candidate set is drawn heavily from pages already ranking, then passages are selected for how directly and confidently they answer the query. Two consequences follow. First, classic search fundamentals transfer more here than on any other engine. Second, passage structure matters independently of ranking: a page at position two that answers the question in its first paragraph is frequently preferred to a position-one page that takes 600 words to get there.
Why it matters for your brand
This is the surface where the click economics change fastest. For informational and comparison queries the overview often satisfies the question outright, so the impression inside the answer becomes the asset rather than the visit.
It is also the most measurable transition in your existing reporting: you can watch queries you already rank for start producing overviews, and see whether your ranking translated into presence.

How to track it

Use the phrasing buyers actually type, taken from Search Console and sales calls, not internal jargon.
- Step 02Sample heavily
Triggering is inconsistent, so run each query many times per cycle and treat non-triggering as a recorded outcome.
- Step 03Capture the links

- Step 04Separate presence from citation
Being named in the text and being one of the linked sources are different wins with different fixes.
- Step 05Compare against your rankings
List queries where you rank well but are absent from the overview; those are passage-structure problems, not authority problems.
- Track triggering rate as its own metric.
- Fix answer structure on pages that already rank but are not cited.
- Keep schema and last-updated dates honest and current.
- Store the linked sources on every captured overview.
- Report this engine separately from ChatGPT and Claude.
- Assume position one guarantees inclusion.
- Sample once and conclude the surface does not trigger for you.
- Republish unchanged content to fake freshness.
- Treat lost clicks as lost visibility if you are inside the answer.
- Ignore the linked-domain list; it names your real competitor set.
What to report
For leadership: what share of your tracked queries now produce an AI answer, how often you appear in it, and how that compares with your traditional ranking position. That contrast is the clearest way to show a board why the programme exists.
