Two metrics for AI answer visibility. One counts source links, the other counts brand mentions. They move independently and need separate playbooks.
Both metrics are computed the same way: fix a prompt set, sample every answer across the tracked engines, count what fraction of answers contain the thing you're measuring, express as a percentage. The difference is what's being counted.
AI share of voice counts brand-name mentions in the generated text. If the answer says "Notion, Asana and Linear are the leading options", each of the three earns a mention on that answer.
Citation share counts source links attached to the answer. If that same answer cites notion.so/product, g2.com/products/notion and reddit.com/r/productivity, then Notion earns a citation but Asana and Linear don't — even though all three were mentioned.
Getting into a well-ranked "best X" list moves share of voice without necessarily moving citation share. Publishing a widely-linked methodology or benchmark page moves citation share without necessarily changing how often you're mentioned. Real programs track both and ship against gaps in whichever one is lagging.
